The preteen young male missing a father figure and bonding with a robot story has already been done and I liked the Ah-nold Terminator II version much better, since he wasn't remote controlled. There are also some other distinct differences in the two films, Atom was not sent back from the future to terminate Max (Dakota Goyo) he was just a tin man with no brain, oh wait that resembles another story, and Max's father Charlie (Hugh Jackman) is very much alive, but possibly the most selfish person on the planet. We know from the trailer that the fight game has changed, that Charlie was once a pretty decent boxer, but lost his place in history to robot boxing, which is now the sport of the future. Max finds Atom who is a sparring bot in the robot graveyard and tries to get a foothold in the robot boxing circuit, for the most part so that he can spend time with his father. This film tried really hard to be a something for everybody story starting with the emotional connection from a father and son bonding, it gave us a road trip, special effects with some hard hitting robot boxing following the Rocky (every single one of them) roadmap of rooting for the underdog, even a dash of romance, and still it just seemed like something was missing. Maybe if Charlie had been a less flawed character, or if anybody in the entire film was likable on any scale of likability aside from Max. Ricky (Kevin Durand) was awful but I guess that made for a pretty good villain, Bailey (Evangeline Lilly) was a sad case and could have done so much better, and for my taste there was just not enough on screen time for Finn (Anthony Mackey. OK, so I liked two characters out of the whole bunch, Max and Finn. I just wanted something or anything from this film that delivered a tab bit more than expected. After having seen the trailer and then the movie it was of no surprise to me that there was pretty much nothing left to be desired at the screening. Because of my generous nature and because I thought that the robot special effects were reasonable, although if they had contacted the NFL and found out who designed their robot's movements, the bots would have moved a lot less clunky, I give it an amber light.
